Pattern and repetition are used to emphasise special memories of the Australian desert

ABOUT CHRIS:

I use bold abstract, naïve patterns and shapes that are influenced by time spent working in Australia, as well as overseas in international development.

The Australian desert landscapes, flora and fauna appearing in my works, represent belonging and sense of place.

I have been influenced by the spiritual connection of traditional First Nations people, to their sense of place and identity. Now living in the Yarra Valley in Melbourne I enjoy the shapes, patterns and textures of the landscapes around me.

Pattern and repetition are used to emphasise special memories of the Australian desert that were prominent when I spent time living in jungle climates overseas, missing the open sky, flat horizons and sparse flora.

I enjoy observing the local birds. I paint them as a metaphor of freedom and creativity a contrast to control of modern regular edged shapes.

I am an emerging, self-taught artist using acrylic, based in Mount Evelyn, Melbourne.
