Wine + Art!

YAVA’s goal is to inspire, educate and bring people together. World-class art, artists, patrons and collectors coalesce in our space, which is inherently tied to the Yarra Valley region. We’re passionate about linking food, wine & the arts as fabulous reasons to visit the Yarra Valley.

a little about Steels Gate

Steels Gate Wines Co-Directors and Owners Matthew Davis and Brad Atkins grow their own fruit and make the wine themselves.

They use environmentally sustainable methods across all facets from vine to final wine production. The vineyards are dry-grown with a “minimal intervention” approach which includes majority organic fungicide spraying and no use of herbicides or pesticides.

YAVA is thrilled to be able to move beyond the gallery walls and curate spaces in our partners’ venues. The third of our winery venues is Steels Gate. Throughout Spring we welcome you to enjoy the works of Jane Fitzherbert. Jane was an artist who had an eye for colour and form, drawing from the natural world to create her abstract works.

You can see the artworks ‘live’ hanging at Steels Gate.

Jane Fitzherbert was a Yarra Valley based abstract artist.

Jane described her artistic philosophy in this way: “When it comes to abstract painting, I feel that a work should stand on its own without a title, or any explanation from the artist, that might confine the viewer’s ideas to a particular interpretation. I prefer to leave it to the observer’s own imagination to find meaningful content in my paintings. This creates a two-way dialogue, which is important to me, and allows the viewer to see in the work whatever is meaningful to them”.

Steels Gate Vineyard

When Matthew and Brad purchased the property in 2009, the vineyard was overrun by blackberries and the vines needed some extra love and care. Since then, they have been revived to their former glory.

The blocks are surrounded by King Lake National Park and their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines are completely un-irrigated and hand nurtured.
