exploring fabric manipulation through digital, sewn, painted, dyed, printed and collaged techniques

ABOUT KAREN:

Textile art has always been an inspiration in my life. From family that sewed and painted, to studying art throughout school. I have always been doing something creative with art and textiles.

I have studied with many painting and textile artists, both locally and internationally. I am always researching and exploring new techniques and skills, reinforcing my own style of art through textiles and mixed media.

Historically I have exhibited and sold ceramic sculpture, owned a bridal bag business, sold up-cycled vintage bags, attaching new fabric bags to antique frames, as well as dyeing lace and fabrics.

My current artwork is textile based, incorporating other mixed mediums, photography, acrylic paints, dyes, lino and mono printing, making stamps and stencils.

I love beautiful colours and textures, often dyeing and printing my own fabrics. Using plants and nature to eco-dye the fabrics, or using plants as printing masks during sun-printing and dyeing. I also use old fabrics and linen, upcycling them to be reimagined into something new.

My textile art often contains images of nature, reflecting the feelings and emotions that nature can evoke in people; inspiring the belief that, as nature cycles through the seasons, so do our lives.
