Creating realistic wildlife artwork with fibre to record the beauty of our threatened nature

ABOUT KATE:

Life has been Kate’s Teacher. She has always been creative, owning a wool shop in Healesville in the 80’s, when bright and colourful jumpers were the rage and Kate turned her hand to designing and sold many of her creations.  After trying many different mediums, she found her niche in 2016 in the new world of Fibre Art, particularly needle felting and felting in all its forms.

Australian birds and wildlife feature in her work which is created mostly from photographs, with the kind permission of the photographers. All her work is free hand, translated by eye for the detail, to a felt canvas. 3D Fibre sculpture is an extension of this art form and for Kate, creating soft sculptures using only wool fibre and a barbed needle is a form of meditation.

Creating at home on the outskirts of Healesville, Kate’s studio is a small corner of her home office, where glimpses of foraging birds can keep her intrigued and she often enjoys visits from native parrots and circling eagles.

Since having a very successful exhibition in Little Fishes Gallery in Marysville and posting photos and videos to a dedicated facebook group, Kate has enjoyed the patronage of a keen collector from the USA, who’s unusual requests every few months taught Kate to think outside the box. The requests ranged from a lifesize sculpture of a Bengal Cat, 20cm sculptures of a Kungfu Kangaroo, a pet dog, a mother and baby Koala.

Aside from creating one off fibre sculpture pieces and fibre paintings, Kate loves working in watercolour and pastel.  Kate enjoys teaching the artform of Needle Felting to all age groups and loves the challenge of pet portraits and sculpture commissions.

Kate donates a portion of the sale price of her pieces to several wildlife charities.

Kate will be participating in Open Studios on 12 & 13 October 2024.
