ABOUT KHOI:

Vietnamese-born Khoi Bui commenced piano lessons during primary school, in Perth. He followed this with further tuition as a distraction from his medical studies at Adelaide University, mentored by the distinguished Australian composer Stephen Whittington. After training in Cardio-thoracic surgery, Dr Bui stepped out of the operating theatre for four years of keyboard study at The Conservatory of Music, University of Melbourne, studying with Professor Max Cooke (piano) and Anne Morgan (harpsichord). After graduating, Khoi founded the baroque chamber group Ensemble Systolica, touring concerts and stage performances to Castlemaine Festival, Mt Beauty Music Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, and a host of regional venues.

In more recent times Khoi has performed locally: in the Memo Hall with the Australian Doctors’ Orchestra, on Harpsichord; at an AGM of Yarra Valley Arts; in the orchestra for the Yarra Valley Opera Festival; and at fundraising concerts for Doctors Without Borders.

Khoi’s parallel creative passion is photography. His images have seen publication in various magazines. In 2021 Khoi took part in YAVA’s Soundscape exhibition, allowing him the opportunity to combine his passions for photography and music. His recital as part of the Soundscape exhibition combined imagery, reading and music allowing for an exploration and juxtaposition of the senses.

In 2022, Khoi collaborated with YAVA in organising SenseFest, a 3-day festival celebrating art, music, food & wine and exploring the interactions of the senses.

In 2023 Khoi’s image Morning Awakening (2nd last image below) was Finalist in the prestigeous Bird Life Australia Photography Awards - Landscape category.
