Underwater life has held a fascination for Ian George over many years. He loves to dive, witnessing the shapes and forms of plants and animals that move and hold themselves so differently from life on land.
Ian’s intuitive translation of those forms into timber sculpture results in a mesmeric combination: these pieces play with concepts of gravity, movement and tension in a way that leaves the viewer in wonder. Responding to, but not a reproduction of, the life Ian encounters in the sea, these forms appear to move and float, yet are firmly present.
A study of contrasting relationships – hard spines pushing through soft flesh; curving forms interrupted by geometric shapes – defines this exhibition of thirty-eight pieces, coming together with the flow and movement of a current. Ian prefers salvaged timbers, using mainly native blackwood and Huon pine, with some exotic species or other feature woods.
