Vessels & Visions

Ted Secombe and David Miller

Artists: Ted Secombe and David Miller

Two friends, two lifelong artists, two great appreciators of nature: Ted Secombe and David Miller both possess an evergreen curiosity and the commitment to make it manifest. They bring their work together in this exhibition, which showcases Ted’s precise ceramic vessels alongside David’s bold landscape paintings. We are witness to a playful and admiring conversation between the two friends – David and Ted acknowledge each other’s artistry, technique and creative practice in this collection.

From an early beginning as a biochemist, Ted found his way with ceramics through self-led learning and determination. This practice has sustained him for 45 years. His initial inclination for science still informs the creation of his glazes, which are entirely original and successfully experimental. Always a creative, David has turned his focus towards several outlets and techniques, with accomplishments across graphic design and children’s book publishing. Now immersed in painting, he uses simple colour schemes and strong contrasts to convey his message: honour the beauty of our landscape with a careful look.

Ted has created glazes for his pieces in this exhibition specifically from David’s colour palette; David has painted Ted’s kiln. In Vessels & Visions, two established artists bring a fresh perspective to their own work while subtly reflecting that of the other, as seemingly disparate practices coalesce.
